April 5, 2019 is Opening Day at Tweetsie Railroad.
For over three decades, we’ve been celebrating the opening of Trout Season with friendly competition and prizes! The annual Blowing Rock Trout Derby is a much-anticipated early springtime event in the village. We have some of the best trout fishing anywhere in the Southeast, so the combination of the Derby and our lovely springtime makes for a great reason to visit. Fishing is a sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime and the Derby is a great way to be together as a family.
2019 brings the 40th Annual Blowing Rock Trout Derby on Saturday, April 6.
Derby hours begin at sunrise on Saturday, April 8, 2018, and end at 4pm on the same day.
Catches should be taken to the official Derby Headquarters to enter for measuring. Headquarters: : The Blowing Rock Clubhouse, 108 Lakeside Drive, Blowing Rock, NC 28605.
Trout caught in any Watauga County body of water are eligible.
Prizes are awarded at 4:30pm at Derby Headquarters.
Broyhill Lake in Blowing Rock is restricted to fishing by children and persons with disabilities. No fishing license is required for Broyhill Lake. There is a limit of three fish per person from Broyhill Lake.
All Fishing and Wildlife laws should be followed for Watauga County public waters, including possession of valid fishing license and following all posted regulations.
No entry fees are required and no pre-registration is necessary.

Sharing our Mountain Heritage! The Christmas in July Festival is one of the best, old fashioned summer festivals in the South drawing thousands to historic West Jefferson, NC each July! The Festival began in 1987 as a celebration of the Christmas Tree Industry Ashe County, NC is known for. In 2015, Ashe County, NC was named the #1 Christmas Tree producer in the United States. The Festival is a free-admission event held in Downtown West Jefferson featuring the very best in traditional mountain music, handmade arts & crafts vendors throughout the region while still celebrating the Christmas Tree industry. Numerous food vendors feature a variety of the infamous delicious festival foods & more. Also, you don't want to miss the annual Civil War re-enactments held throughout the day of the festival at the West Jefferson Municipal Park. Todd New River Festival October 13, 2018 in historic Todd NC will take place once again on the banks of the New River at Cook Memorial Park in Todd North Carolina. In its fourth year, Carolina in the Fall™ has become an annual pilgrimage of bluegrass and folk music lovers. In addition to great music, those that attend will be treated to some of North Carolina’s best food as each year trucks from the region will bring their secret recipes to feed the masses and vie for the Carolina in the Fall™ Food Truck Championship trophy.
